Welsh chapels along the River Chubut

Patagonia - The only other community where Welsh is spoken

One of the nations where we believe the Lord has called us in Patagonia. We've had the privilege of ministering in the East coast in May 2024, and in November 2025 we ministered from West to East right up towards the mighty Andes mountain range.

The first Welsh settlers arrived near the mouth of the Chubut river in 1865, seeking a life free from English influence (at least that was partly the reason). By 1911 there were around 1,000 Welsh settlers, spreading across land given by the Argentinian government. The colony only succeeded in thriving after some years of poverty and hardship but eventually established a corner of Welsh language and culture 7,000 miles from Cardiff.

After some degree of assimilation in the early 20th century, renewed contacts with the "homeland" in the 1960s led to a revival of Welsh language and culture. Today there are Welsh language newspapers adn media and even a Pagagonian eisteddfod!

Many, even in Wales, don't know that there was a migration of Welsh in the mid-1800s some 6,000 miles by ship to settle and find a new life in Southern Argentina.

Wales Revival Alliance is spear-heading the renewal of links between the colony and the Welsh Homeland and finding huge favour there among the descendants of the colonists - many of whom still speak Welsh and worship in traditional Welsh-style chapels.
